Background
Tara Hutchinson is the founder and principal designer of Tara Hutch Home, an interior design practice she began developing professionally in 2024 after years of being drawn to interiors. Raised by a single father, Hutchinson took an interest in decorating from an early age, rearranging furniture, experimenting with color in her own bedroom, and reading design books throughout her teenage years.
Although she initially considered attending design school, Hutchinson ultimately chose to study business in college. Her professional path eventually led to finance, where she worked as a relationship manager and developed an ability to build connections with people. Design remained a consistent part of her life throughout those years, from helping friends decorate their homes to finding inspiration through books, travel, and designing her own spaces.
After getting married and having children, Hutchinson decided to step away from finance and become a stay at home mother. During that period, her family built two homes, giving her the opportunity to become closely involved in the building process. As her children began school and friends continued asking for design advice, she started exploring how her longtime interest could become a professional practice.
Tara Hutch Home initially began with plans for an online home decor shop. As Hutchinson helped customers and friends understand how to style their spaces, however, the demand for her design services became increasingly clear. She began taking on paid projects, actively sought new opportunities, and gradually shifted the business toward interior design.
Approach
Hutchinson approaches each project by first getting to know the people who will live in the space. She wants to understand her clients on a personal level, including their interests and the way they live, so that the resulting interiors reflect them rather than a predetermined studio aesthetic.
While individual projects can look considerably different from one another, Hutchinson describes her overall perspective as timeless with a contemporary influence. Her goal is to create interiors that feel relevant beyond a particular moment, with an emphasis on pieces and materials that are well made, well constructed, and intended to last.
Historic architecture is an important source of inspiration. Living in the Philadelphia area gives Hutchinson regular exposure to older stone homes and buildings, and she often stops to photograph architectural details that catch her attention. That connection to older structures reinforces her preference for timeless design and her appreciation for the enduring qualities of thoughtful construction.
As her clientele continues to evolve, Hutchinson works across projects in different locations, including the Main Line, Lehigh Valley, and Ocean City. Rather than allowing those different settings to dictate a particular look, she continues to build each project around the individual client and how they want to experience their home.
Beyond Design
Building Tara Hutch Home has required Hutchinson to balance design with the realities of running a growing business. Her responsibilities include operations, marketing, client communication, and managing multiple active projects, while a growing team provides support with installations and other aspects of the design process.
Persistence has played an important role in that growth. Early in the business, Hutchinson did not wait for clients to find her. She handed out flyers door to door at new developments and pursued opportunities directly, an approach that reflects her willingness to act when she wants something and continue moving forward despite uncertainty.
She also finds encouragement in learning from other designers and listening to the stories behind their careers. Podcasts, along with the experiences of designers she admires, provide perspective during challenging moments and remind her that many people have navigated similar pressures while building creative businesses.
When those pressures become overwhelming, Hutchinson turns to meditation, music, and time away from the problem to reset. She also values the support of the people around her, particularly as her team continues to grow.
Looking back at the career changes that eventually brought her to interior design, Hutchinson wishes she had pursued the work sooner. Today, the continued growth of Tara Hutch Home has strengthened her belief in following the opportunities that feel most aligned, even when the outcome is uncertain.
