Preparing for your Design in the Media interview should be simple. Below you’ll find answers to common questions about the interview process, video setup, social clips, publishing, and what happens after your conversation with Brad. Whether you are preparing for your interview or waiting for your feature to go live, this page is designed to help you know what to expect.

About the Interview

What is Design in the Media?

Design in the Media is an editorial platform dedicated to featuring interior designers, architects, and studio founders. Through in-depth conversations with Brad Wells, we highlight the stories, perspectives, and work of design professionals who are shaping the industry. Each feature includes a written profile, a blog post, and social media content published across Instagram and LinkedIn.

What does the interview process look like?

The process is simple and relaxed. Once your interview is scheduled, our team will confirm all the details and send you a few things to prepare. Brad will conduct a one-on-one conversation via Google Meet. No script, no formal structure, just an honest editorial conversation about your work, your studio, and your perspective on design. After the interview, we may follow up with an optional request to record a few short video clips.

How long does the interview take?

Most interviews run between 30 and 60 minutes. There is no strict time limit. We follow the conversation wherever it goes.

Will the interview be recorded?

Yes. All interviews are recorded via Google Meet and a transcript is generated. The recording and transcript are used exclusively for content production purposes and are not shared publicly.

Do I need to prepare anything ahead of the interview?

Not in a formal sense. We will send you the interview details in advance and our team does thorough research beforehand so Brad will already be familiar with your work. The best preparation is just being yourself and thinking about what you would love to share about your studio and your story.

The Video Setup

How do I make my video look its best?

You do not need professional equipment. A smartphone works perfectly. Here are the things that make the biggest difference:

  • Lighting: Natural light is your best friend. Sit facing a window if possible. Avoid having a window or bright light source behind you because it will create a dark silhouette on camera.
  • Background: Choose a clean, simple background. A neutral wall, a bookshelf, or a corner of your studio works well. Avoid busy or cluttered backgrounds.
  • Camera angle: Place your phone or laptop camera at eye level. Propping your device on books or a stand helps. Looking slightly up or down at the camera is distracting. Eye level is always best.
  • Sound: Find a quiet space. Turn off fans, air conditioning, or anything that creates background noise. Earbuds or headphones with a built-in microphone can significantly improve your audio.
  • Stability: Keep the camera still. If recording on your phone, use a stand or prop it against something stable so it does not shake.
What format should I record in?

Portrait format, or vertical, the same way you would film a video for Instagram Stories. This is important because the clips are optimized for social media.

What resolution should I use?

The higher the better. On iPhone go to Settings → Camera → Record Video and select 1080p or 4K. On Android the resolution setting is usually found in the Camera app settings under Video Quality.

The Clips

What are the video clips and are they required?

After the interview our team may send you a document with a few suggested prompts, short topics or moments from your conversation that we think would translate well as standalone video clips for social media. Recording these clips is completely optional. If recording does not work for you just let us know and we will work with what we have from the interview.

What should I say in the clips?

The prompts we send are just suggestions. You are welcome to follow them closely, put them in your own words, or respond to a topic of your choosing that feels true to your story. The most important thing is that it feels natural and genuine, not scripted.

How long should each clip be?

Aim for 40 to 90 seconds per clip. You do not need to be exact. Longer is fine. Our team will edit it down to the best part.

How do I send the clips?

You can send them via Google Drive, WeTransfer, Dropbox, or directly by email. If the file is too large to attach just upload it to a shared folder and send us the link. Please send as MP4 or MOV files if possible.

Your Feature

What will my feature include?

Every feature includes:

  • A written interview published on designinthemedia.com
  • An evergreen profile page on designinthemedia.com
  • A social media carousel posted on Instagram and LinkedIn
  • A short video reel posted on Instagram and LinkedIn
  • A LinkedIn article
When will my feature be published?

Publishing timelines vary depending on the volume of interviews in production. Our team will notify you by email once your feature is live and ready to be shared.

Can I review my feature before it goes live?

Yes. Once both your interview post and profile page are published on the website our team will send you the links for review. If anything needs to be adjusted please let us know as soon as possible so we can make changes before the social posts go live.

Can I request edits after the feature is published?

Yes. If you notice any inaccuracies or anything you would like changed just reach out and we will take care of it.

Will I be tagged on social media?

Yes. You will receive an Instagram collaboration invite when your posts go live. Accepting it significantly expands the reach of your feature. We will also tag your studio and personal accounts across Instagram and LinkedIn.

Is there anything I can do to help the feature reach more people?

Absolutely. A few things that make a real difference:

  • Accept the Instagram collaboration invite as soon as you receive it.
  • Share your feature to your Instagram Stories and LinkedIn when it goes live.
  • Tag any vendors, photographers, or teammates who contributed to the projects we featured. It is a great way to shout them out and helps the post reach their audiences too.
  • Comment on your post when it goes live. Early engagement signals to the algorithm that the content is worth showing to more people.
