Matt Donahoe of Bureau Interior Design on Process Driven Design, Trust Across Distance, and Building Through Relationships

Design for Matt Donahoe is never static. It is a constant state of evolution, shaped by curiosity, experience, and an ongoing awareness of what a space is meant to become. Whether working on a home in Nashville or a project several time zones away, the focus remains on clarity of vision and the experience of the people who will live inside the work.

From Retail Floors to Residential Spaces

Early work in retail design introduced a fast paced rhythm built on iteration. Stores opened, lessons were learned, and designs were refined again and again. That cycle carried forward into hospitality design, where technical rigor, documentation, and coordination across global teams became essential. Residential work grew naturally out of that foundation, bringing the same discipline into more personal environments.

Designing With Simplicity in Mind

Running a studio introduced a different kind of challenge. Business required a new skill set, one learned through trial, reflection, and the support of trusted partners. Simplicity became a guiding principle. Instead of stacking tools and platforms, processes were boiled down to what truly served the work. Thinking like a designer helped shape how decisions were made, keeping emotion, intuition, and clarity at the center.

Trust as the Foundation for Remote Work

Projects span cities, states, and countries, yet distance is not seen as a barrier. Strong communication, mutual understanding, and a shared vision allow work to move forward even when teams are not physically together. The most successful projects are built on trust, both with clients and with collaborators on the ground, supported by clear systems and careful planning.

Partnerships That Bring Ideas to Life

Collaboration sits at the heart of Bureau’s process. Relationships extend beyond interiors into architecture, contracting, and highly specialized workshops. Over time, the studio has built a network of artisans who shape custom pieces through metal, wood, stone, and glass. These partnerships allow ideas to move from concept to reality with depth, precision, and character.

Curiosity, Learning, and Staying Open

A desire to be challenged continues to drive the work. Each project offers something new to learn, whether through a client, a site, or a collaborator. Outside of design, curiosity is fed through travel, art, music, and everyday cultural observation. That openness keeps the work fresh and prevents it from becoming formulaic.

Integrity, Longevity, and Measured Growth

Success is defined less by speed and more by longevity. Relationships matter. Clients are carefully chosen, growth is intentional, and integrity guides decision making. Building slowly, staying grounded, and creating work that holds up over time remains central to how Bureau operates.
